Fluid Mechanic’s –
Fluid mechanics is the branch of physics concerned with the mechanics of fluids and the forces on them. It has applications in a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical, civil, chemical and biomedical engineering, geophysics, astrophysics, and biology.

Defination – Fluid Mechanics can also
defined as the science which deals with the study of behaviour of fluids either at rest or in motion.

  • 1. Fluid statics: The fluid which is in state of rest is called as static fluid and its study is called as fluid statics.
  • 2. Fluid kinematics: The fluid which is in state of motion is called as moving fluid. The study of moving fluid without considering the effect of external pressures is called as fluid kinematics.
  • 3. Fluid dynamics: The branch of science which studies the effect of all pressures including the external pressures on the moving fluid is called as fluid dynamics.

Why study of fluid mechanic’s

Fluid statics. Fluid statics or hydrostatics is the branch of fluid mechanics that studies fluids at rest. It embraces the study of the conditions under which fluids are at rest in stable equilibrium; and is contrasted with fluid dynamics, the study of fluids in motion.

Father of Fluid Mechanics :-

Prandtl changed the field of fluid mechanics and is called the modern father of fluid mechanics because of his introduction of boundary layer, turbulence mixing theories etc. Ludwig Prandtl was born in Freising, Bavaria, in 1874.

Suitable for the Civil Engineering students:-

Fluid mechanics is a traditional cornerstone in the education of civil engineers. As numerous
books on this subject suggest, it is possible to introduce fluid mechanics to students in many
ways. This text is an outgrowth of lectures I have given to civil engineering students at the
University of Canterbury during the past 24 years. It contains a blend of what most teachers
would call basic fluid mechanics and applied hydraulics.

Application of fluid mechanics

1. Hydro-electric power plant- hydro- electric power plants are genrally used water to genrate electricity on large scale bases.

2. Hydraulic machines – Machines that Operate fluid like water & oil are called hydraulic machines .The fluid as the capacity to lift heavy loads and exert extremely high pressures.

3. Automobile.

4.Refrigerator and air Conditioners.

5.Thermal power plant.

6.Nuclear power plants.

7.Heat Engines.
